Obviously because he was too far to the right: just another Blairite no one can take apart from Thatcher or Cameron except for the colour of the tie in brand-comparison shows, aka electoral debates.
Large sectors of Labour voters did not bother voting. Many wanted to vote for the SNP, go figure! That last speaks volumes because even if the SNP is not a self-defined leftist party, it has adopted a program that is far to the left of Labour. And that way Labour was erased from Scotland and even the English wanted to vote Scottish Nationalist in many cases.
So why then ?
because Labour became an elitist club and took people for granted.

Sometimes it’s possible to overthink things. This insightful blog has hit the nail on the head
